Mini Golf & Games at the Library! POSTPONED to Sept 26

The Library's 5th Annual Mini Golf fundraiser will be held on Saturday April 4, 2020  September 26, 2020.  [POSTPONED because of the Covid-19 epidemic.]

We have expanded the title to "Mini Golf and Games at the Holyoke Public Library" because a Foosball tournament is being added this year.

Come play mini golf INSIDE the Library or Foosball OUTSIDE in the Library Park.

Steps to the future

Save the date Saturday April 4, 2020, for the 5th Annual "Mini Golf in the Library! ¡Minigolf en la Biblioteca! fundraiser.

Plan to join us for another fun-filled day. We volunteer our time to help families enjoy this special event, and to help raise funds for the Holyoke Public Library. We invite local businesses, organizations and individuals to "sponsor" segments of the 18-hole course inside the library building.

To become a sponsor of the 2020 event, or to volunteer to help, please contact Nancy Kocsmiersky in the Library Finance Office at  ‭(413) 420-8109‬.    Thank you!

Meanwhile, the Friends of the Library organization is well on the way to completing the transition from a separate corporation (founded 1983) to a participating part of the overall Holyoke Public Library Corporation (HPLC, founded 1870).  We are simplifying our structure, eliminating the need for annual submission of tax forms and filing fees, as well as the tasks of recruiting and electing a treasurer, managing bank accounts, and so forth.  We have already taken the necessary steps towards closure of our separate corporation: filing final tax forms and working with lawyers to petition the Attorney General of the Commonwealth for official dissolution. We await official approval from the AG. Steps will then be taken by HPLC to adjust the bylaws to add the Friends as an on-going committee.

The Mini Golf fundraiser, initiated by the Friends in 2016, has raised an average of $6,000 per year for the Library. Two years ago HPLC voted to have the Library's Finance Office manage the financial aspects of this event, while the Friends continued to supply volunteers. That arrangement will continue.  We (Friends volunteers) are delighted to have the Library's Finance Office involved – a very helpful step in collaboration and support of this unique fundraiser.

Mini Golf fun and photos

We thank photographer Steven Nanton of The Republican/MassLive for capturing excellent photos of people enjoying Mini Golf  in the Library on April 6; see his 35 photos on MassLive.

What a wonderful day that was!  We registered over 350 players during the daytime hours, and had additional players during the evening cocktail party.  Last year 233 had registered; we are delighted by the larger turnout this year.

The library was buzzing with activity all day.  Emma Rose Huse of Mask Makers Face Painting was busy from 11am-3:30pm decorating young faces.

Hole sponsors brought creative props, "obstacles" and decorations to add along the course. Holyoke Codes created elaborate structures with robotic animations for Holes 17 and 18.  See Sandy Ward's PHOTO ALBUM. 

Thanks to advance sponsorships by local companies and agencies, this community event does not cost the library anything. In fact, the Holyoke Public Library gained about $5000 in proceeds above the expenses of equipment and publicity.   We are thankful too for the VOLUNTEERS who staff the event. Without all this support, it would not be possible.

2019 Mini Golf in the Library! ¡Minigolf en la Biblioteca!

The 4th Annual "Mini Golf in the Library!" fundraiser and FUN-raiser will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019.  Come play 18 holes of mini golf on five levels of the library, including some stairway "holes" as seen here.  (Elevator available for those who wish to avoid stairs.) 

Family-friendly Mini Golf:  9:30 am to 3:30 pm.
 Free for children under 5 years. $5 for adults and teens, 
$3 for youth aged 5-12.
La Mesa Food Truck will be selling food nearby.

The Friends of the Holyoke Public Library for many years used a Post Office Box address on all our mailings and membership forms.  Effective September 30, 2018, we have cancelled our lease of that box, which was rarely used in the past 12 months. The addresses of Friends members, in past years, were listed on a spreadsheet maintained by a Friends volunteer (usually our Membership Chair, or Treasurer) and also listed in the donor database maintained by staff in the Holyoke Public Library Development Office. Keeping these two separate mailing lists up-to-date has been challenging at times, and extra work. We have now simplified the process. There is only ONE database now, not two. Friends members have all been identified as such in the HPL donor database, so we no longer need to maintain separate records.

The 3rd Annual "Mini Golf in the Library! ¡Minigolf en la Biblioteca!" fundraiser was indeed a FUN raiser, as you can see from these photos. Over 230 people played mini golf in the Holyoke Public Library on Saturday, in addition to the Friday night party-goers. We thank Rick and Russ Bolton of Library Mini Golf LLC for designing, providing, and supervising the 18-hole mini golf course. We thank our Event Sponsors and Hole Sponsors, especially those who added creative obstacles and decorations. We also appreciate the donors of auction items and services, such as Mask Makers Face Painting, and Brennan's Place. We thank all who came to play.

Launch of "Saber es Poder" collection

Thanks to a grant from the Carlos Vega Fund for Social Justice, and matching funds from the Friends of the Library, an important new collection is available at the Holyoke Public Library.  

Saber es poder: Resources on Puerto Rican and Latinx History, Culture, and Social Movements

On October 20, 2017, in conjunction with Dr. Llana Barber's presentation about her book Latino City, Friends board member Kate Kruckemeyer announced the arrival of relevant books for this new collection, which is intended to encourage and support Holyoke residents’ understanding of the Puerto Rican experience, and celebrate contributions of Latinx peoples to American culture.

The audience was invited to examine the new books, and to borrow any of interest. Julita was delighted to find a perfect book to share with her grandson.

More books will be added in the future. A working group of library staff, academics, and local experts from the public sector are collaborating in developing and promoting the collection.

Future community events in connection with this project are being planned. Bylaws revision passed; new Officers elected

Update from Annual Meeting: The proposed bylaws revision passed, with all present voting in favor.

The following Officers were elected for the 2017-2018 year:

Margaret McCarthy will serve as Membership Chair this year. Sandy Ward will continue as Mini Golf Chair.  Terrence Smith is leading the Comic-Con planning group. Kate is coordinating the Poder es Saber project.

The next Friends board meeting will be Monday October 23, 5:30pm at the Library. (We hope to make it a short meeting, so that people can also get to the Candidates Forum hosted by the Holyoke Youth Task Force that same evening.)

Arroz con gandules and other examples of Puerto Rican food will be served.

Learn the history of Puerto Rico through food as we discover the crops and livestock brought to the island by Taino indians, African slave ships, and Spanish galleons. We'll learn to see the history in every bowl of arroz con gandules.

Eric Toensmeier is the award-winning author of Paradise Lot and Perennial Vegetables, and the co-author of Edible Forest Gardens. He is an appointed lecturer at Yale University, and an international trainer.

A practice "hole" is now on display in the Children's Room.  If you want to practice your putting, please ask the Children's Librarians for the putters and golf ball.

Our 18th Hole Sponsor

Conklin Office Furniture is sponsoring the 18th Hole for our Friends of the Library fundraiser "Mini Golf in the Library! ¡Minigolf en la Biblioteca!" on April 7-8, 2017.

Three representatives of the company came to the Library on March 3 to scope out the space in the Teen Room that will become the 18th hole. Conklin owners Franco and Rosemary Arnold and marketing coordinator Mike Morin met with Sandy Ward, chair of the 2017 Mini Golf Planning Committee. Here are photos taken while they putted golf balls into a temporary "practice hole" that Sandy had set up for their visit.

More elaborate greens, in various shapes, will be provided by Library Mini Golf, LLC, in April. Mr. Bolton of LMG will bring a van packed with equipment to create the 18-hole course. Our local Holyoke sponsors are encouraged to bring their own "obstacles" and decorations to enhance their holes, promoting their business.

What will Conklin bring this year? In 2016, for the 2nd Hole, which wended through stacks on Level 4, they added a fabulous chair festooned with bright balloons.

At one point Sandy tried sitting in that Conklin chair, and found it SO COMFORTABLE that she stayed there, relaxing, for a long time...

... long enough to be called a "SANDy Trap" by players trying to navigate that corner!

Meanwhile, a different Conklin chair donated to the 2016 Silent Auction (Friday night in conjunction with the Mini Golf fundraiser) drew many admirers.

People lined up to sit in that deluxe chair valued at over $900. Barbara Freed, right, from Amherst, enjoyed a turn in the Conklin chair during the 2016 auction.

We thank Conklin Office Furniture for such generosity. Funds raised by the Friends of the Holyoke Public Library are used to support and enhance library programs and services.

After visiting the Teen Room Friday, Franco, Rosemary, and Mike explored other parts of the Library. They especially enjoyed meeting Archivist Eileen Crosby and learning from her about resources relevant to their company's history. She pulled out old maps of Holyoke's canals and the mills along them, including the mill building at 56 Canal Street now owned by Conklin.

Photographs in the Holyoke History Room collection document how their building had looked in the past.

Only some of the original mill buildings owned by American Thread Company remain today. Nevertheless, the portion now owned by Conklin is huge – the area the size of "three football fields," says Franco.

Franco expressed particular interest in finding an image or description of the cupola that used to adorn the top of their mill building (formerly American Thread Company, and originally The Hadley Company). Eileen quickly found a small photo, which she offered to scan.

Conklin is very proud of the extensive array of solar panels recently added to their Appleton building.
